Bestselling Author Guy Gavriel Kay Lends Voice to Second Annual Authors for Indies Day

Toronto, March 1, 2016 – Organizers are excited to announce that bestselling author Guy Gavriel Kay is the volunteer spokesperson for the second annual Authors for Indies Day, scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 30, 2016. Authors for Indies Day is a grassroots event organized in support of Canada’s independent bookstores. On this day, authors across the country will volunteer at their local indies to greet customers, recommend books, and celebrate the vital role of independent bookstores in both the book industry and our communities.

In an open letter, Kay called on Canadian booklovers to show their support for this initiative. Explaining his motivation for getting involved, Kay wrote: “Local indie bookstores are islands of light and knowledge in the communities lucky enough to still have them. So, if we support independent bookstores we aren’t doing so as a benevolent act, we are doing it for ourselves, our neighbourhoods, the richness of community life.”

For last year’s event, nearly 700 authors volunteered at over 120 independent bookstores nation-wide. Stores that participated saw an impressive 18.5% average increase in units sold, according to BookNet Canada. “As the increase in sales confirms, the ‘Authors for Indies’ partnership was an enormous success in promoting independent bookstores to the Canadian book-buyer,” said BookNet Canada CEO Noah Genner. These phenomenal results landed the event on CBC’s list of 10 biggest book stories of 2015.

Almost 450 authors have already signed up for this year’s event, and booksellers are excited to build on last year’s momentum. “This is not an experience you can duplicate online,” says Christine Chu, co-owner of Backbeat Books & Music in Perth, ON. “It’s a unique real-life experience you will remember for a long time to come.”
