In their custom-made nametags, nine enthusiastic local authors took time out of their busy lives to help make Mosaic Book's inaugural Authors for Indies Day in 2015 a success.
Last year we welcomed award-winning authors Alix Hawley (All True Not a Lie in It) and Ashley Little (Anatomy of a Girl Gang) to act as booksellers for a day alongside independent press published and self-published local authors. Sharing industry information and stories amongst themselves and with staff and customers, there was a great bookish/community vibe in the store that afternoon. We enjoyed hanging out with some of our talented local authors and getting to know them better. One success in particular – a visiting author had sent us a list of his favourite Canadian indigenous fiction titles. We were able to create a table display, with those books and his own books front and centre, and he actively hand-sold from that display.
After a 2-year revitalization project, downtown Kelowna has become a really happening place. Through the nice-weather months, people know there is usually something going on at Mosaic on a Saturday afternoon, from author signings to Small Shop Saturdays. Authors for Indies Day fits nicely into the downtown's independent, community-minded spirit.
We've already had one of last year's authors ask to participate again this year and we're convinced that year after year, the Author for Indies brand will grow and become an anticipated annual event in Kelowna – and across Canada!
