When I was younger, going to the bookstore meant driving with my mother to Streetsville – a small neighbourhood in Mississauga, the Toronto suburb where I grew up. The bookstore was – and still is – a small, narrow shop in an old village full of history.

Hello book lovers coast to coast across Canada. Yes, I'm channeling a memory of early Hockey Night in Canada broadcasts with that salutation. But I want to suggest that our independent bookstores can matter as much to us, in our own neighbourhoods, as slap shots and power plays.
